Boarding at Headfort
Beyond the Bells & Whistles
For more than seventy years, Headfort School has been a home away from home for children from across the world. What made us distinctive then remains at the heart of who we are today: a boarding experience rooted in heritage, community and genuine care.
Our pupils live in a house built in 1766 — one of Ireland’s finest examples of Georgian architecture. This extraordinary setting is not a backdrop; it is part of the magic. The history of where they live, the sanctuary the building provides, and the homeliness of the West Wing all shape the experience of being a Headfort boarder.
We have recently refreshed our facilities — upgrading bathrooms, modernising dormitories and improving comfort — but always with respect for the house’s three‑century story. At Headfort, simplicity is a strength. We teach our students that true comfort begins with knowing yourself, and grows through finding where you belong.
The Girls Dormitory
The Girls Dormitory sits on a mezzanine floor, offering a warm, communal space for up to twenty girls. Beautifully appointed bathrooms and shared living areas create an environment where friendships deepen and confidence grows. Each year, the girls decorate their dorm together — a tradition that turns the space into a reflection of their personalities, creativity and collective spirit.

The Boys Dormitory
Located on the first floor of the West Wing, the Boys Dormitory provides space for forty boys. Recently renovated bathrooms and refreshed dorm rooms offer comfort while preserving the character of the house. The boys enjoy both companionship and moments of solitude — learning to live alongside one another with respect, independence and good humour.
Our Philosophy
At Headfort, we believe that the “bells and whistles” belong elsewhere. What matters most is connection, community and compassion — the foundations of good character. In a world that can feel chaotic, we give children a place that is steady, human and real.
We do not claim to be state‑of‑the‑art; our house is nearly three hundred years old. Instead, we proudly claim something far more valuable: Headfort students grow into resilient, kind, courageous and empathetic young people. There is no price that can be placed on this — and no modern feature that can ever replace it.
